Amino acids are essential to health. Most form the small structural components of protein and are required for the synthesis of protein within the body. The primary function of most Amino Acids is to furnish the essential material for duplication of the genetic code, for cell division, and for the formation of muscles and connective tissue. Amino acids are classified as either Essential Amino Acids or Non Essential Amino Acids; the latter means that the Amino Acid can be manufactured within the Liver from other Amino Acids and from materials within our food. The former means that these Amino Acids cannot be made in our bodies, but rather are made by plants and animals which we eat as food. Cysteine is a sulphur-containing Non Essential Amino Acid which helps in the maintenance of the Immune System by helping to cleanse the body of impurities. Cysteine also plays a role in energy metabolism. Like a number of other Amino Acids, it can be used as fuel if necessary; it can be converted into Glucose, which can then be oxidised for energy or stored as Glycogen. Cysteine is also a component of hair.

Glutamine is a Non Essential Amino Acid which can normally be synthesized in the body from many substances. It is closely related to Glutamic Acid and Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) because of their metabolic teamwork as neutotransmitters. Glutamic Acid and Glutamine are dominant Amino Acids of Cerebrospinal fluid and are classified as powerful "Brain Fuel" sources. Glutamine is required for the transamination (or modification) of other Non Essential Amino Acids. It also plays an important role in the maintenance of the body`s Nitrogen balance and gut integrity.

Glutathione is a ubiquitous Tripeptide composed of Cysteine, Glutamic Acid and Glycine. Glutathione has many roles, its chief one being that of a co-enzyme in antioxidant enzymes. It is a key player in the liver`s role as a detoxification organ. Glutathione is also important for the formation of Red and White Blood Cells.

It has been suggested that Histidine is more of an Essential Amino Acid rather than Non Essential. It is required for optimum growth. Histidine is metabolised into the neurotransmitter Histamine which is used by the body in its response to foreign substances. Histidine plays an important part in the production of Red and White Blood Cells. It also helps to maintain the Myelin Sheath which is the protective shield for nerves.

Lysine is an Essential Amino Acid, found in large quantities in muscle tissues and little in vegetarian foods. Only Glutamic Acid and Aspartic Acid are as concentrated as Lysine in muscles. Normal Lysine metabolism is dependent upon many nutrients including Niacin, Vitamin B-6, Riboflavin, Vitamin C, Glutamic Acid and Iron. Lysine takes part in Bone Growth by means of aiding Calcium absorption, and it also has a role in Collagen integrity. Lysine is the precursor for the important Amino Acid Citrulline.

Methionine is one of the Essential Sulphur Amino Acids, because humans, unlike Bacteria, cannot synthesize Methionine from Aspartic Acid. Methionine is required in the structure of Nucleic Acid, Collagen formation, and protein synthesis of cells. Methionine` s three major metabolic roles are as a Methyl and a Sulphur donor and a precursor to other Sulphur Amino Acids such as Cysteine and Taurine.

Like Tyrosine, it is the precursor of Catecholamines which consist of Dopamine, Epinephrine (otherwise known as adrenalin) and Tyramine. It is metabolised primarily in the Liver. Normal metabolism of Phenylalanine requires Iron, Niacin, Vitamin B-6, Copper and Vitamin C. Phenylalanine is the starting material of several catecholamines and also of ubiquinone (Co-Enzyme Q10). It also plays a role in learning and memory.

Once in the Brain, it is a precursor for the Neurotransmitters Dopamine, Norepinephrine and Epinephrine better known an Adrenalin. These Neurotransmitters are an important part of the body`s Sympathetic Nervous System. Tyrosine is also the precursor for Thyroxine, Catecholamines and the major human pigment, Melanin. It plays a role in the function of the Adrenal, Pituitary and Thyroid glands. Tyrosine is not found in large quantities throughout the body because it is rapidly metabolised.

Taurine is one of the lesser known Sulphur Amino Acids, and can be synthesized by the body from Cysteine when Vitamin B-6 is present. It plays a variety of roles in the normal functioning of the Brain, Heart, Gallbladder, Eyes and Vascular System. Taurine has many diverse biological functions, serving as a Neurotransmitter in the Brain, a stabiliser of cell membranes and a facilitator in the transport of ions such as Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium. Taurine, after GABA, is the second most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. The Amino Acids Alanine, Glutamic Acid and Pantothenic Acid inhibit Taurine metabolism, while Vitamins A and B-6, Zinc and Manganese help to synthesise Taurine. Cysteine and Vitamin B-6 are the nutrients most directly involved in Taurine synthesis. The Gallbladder utilises Taurine for the formation of Taurocholic Acid, one of the two primary Bile Acids necessary for the breakdown of fats in the Small Intestine. Taurine is also involved with Bilirubin and Cholesterol excretion in Bile.
